PAPERS RELATING TO THE WAR OF CANDIA; 1667-1669. Italian. Copy. Imperfect. A collection of diaries reporting the Venetian military actions in Crete from 22 May 1667 to 14 April 1669. The MS. is described (with incorrect shelfmark 8652) by Foligno, anno 6, t. xi (1906), pt. i, no. xlviii, p. 176. It is also mentioned by Hasluck, p. 203, n. 4. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford with shelfmark 'L/20/C' (front pastedown). '360' in pencil in top right corner of armorial bookplate. Purchased, together with Add. 8595, 8636, 8637, 8638, and 8641, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 360 (part).
Paper; ff. 248+iii, plus one unfoliated blank after ff. 175 and 187. Composite volume. Missing at least one leaf after f. 138. Modern foliation in pencil breaking at f. 67. Old foliation in ink at centre of lower margin 1-248 (followed here). circa 312 x 222mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. Several Italian hands. Late 17th cent. binding of vellum with pastedowns and contiguous flyleaves of decorated paper, possibly added later.

'Candia 22 Maggio 1667 Dalli 22 Maggio sin hoggi non è cosa particularità di rilievo, che meriti attentione ... xi settembre domenica [1667]...'. Imperfect at end. Another copy of the text in Venice, Bibl. Marciana, It. MS. VII, 2182 (8779), continues up to 1 May 1668.

3. ff. 176-181. 'Diario di Candia dalli 6 sino alli 17 settembre 1668'; 1668. Inc. 'Vedendo l'Eccellentissimo Signor Proveditor Generale Cornaro insieme con l'Eccellentissimo Generale Mosic S. Andrea ch'il Nemico s'andava avvicinando'.
