Account of the Ottoman Empire through the lives of the Sultans from the origins to Sultan Murad IV (1623-1640), followed by a tract on politics and religion in Turkey. With marginal notabilia, a chronological table (f. 66) of the Ottoman Sultans, and an index (ff. 67-74) of names and subjects in alphabetical order. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford with shelfmark 'L/19/D' (front pastedown). Purchased, together with Add. 8647, 8648, 8650, and 8655, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 174 (part).
1. ff. 1-45v. 'Compendio dell'Istoria de monarchi Ottomani', a compendium of Memorie istoriche de monarchi ottomani by Giovanni Sagredo, printed in Venice by Combi & LaNoù in 1673; n.d. Inc. 'Libro primo / L'origine di questa formidabil nacione', expl. (f. 90v) 'avaro crudele vindicativo; disoluto; S. / Fine del Sagredi'. The text is divided into twelve books as Sagredo's work.
2. ff. 46-65v. 'Stato Politico dell'Imperio Ottomano'; n.d. Inc. 'Libro primo / L'Impero Ottomano dà Gl'altri differente; con massime diverse si sostiene / Capitolo primo / massime dell'Impero Ottomano. / Essendosi nel passato libro trascorso una delle doti più principali per formare, stabilire e conservare un impero', expl. 'mantenendo Iddio questa potencia indomita per flagello de nostri peccati. / Fine del 3o et ultimo libro'. The text is divided into three books.
