RELAZIONE OF COSTANTINOPLE; 17th cent. Italian. A description of the city of Constantinople with detailed accounts of the Serraglio, the life of the Sultan, the costumes of Turkish people and the laws of Muslim religion. The MS. in entitled (f. 1) 'Relatione / Della Gran Città di Costantinopoli Con la Vita del Gran Turco, e sua Legge'. Inc. (f. 2) 'La Città di Costantinopoli è fabricata sopra una punta di terra ferma', expl. (f. 97v) 'e si credono esser Martiri morendo nell obbedienza del loro Gran Turco / Finis'. A copy of the same text in Venice, Bibl. Marciana, It. MS. VII, 934 (9013), ff. 87-158, dated 1600 and incomplete at the end. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '358' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8649, 8651, 8652, 8653, and possibly 8646, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 358 (part).
