COSTANTINO GARZONI: Relazione of Constantinople; 1574. Italian. Copy, 1592. Costantino Garzoni was a member of the Venetian Senate, who accompanied the ambassador Andrea Badoer and the new bailo Antonio Tiepolo to Constantinople. The MS. is entitled (f. 1) 'Commentari delle cose di Costantinopoli, et descrittione delle entrate, forze, et Corte del Imperatore de Turchi del Serenissimo Signor Costantino Garzoni dell'anno 1573'. The date 1573 more veneto corresponds to the year 1574. The relazione is divided into two sections: (a) negotiations (ff. 2-25v) of Venice with the Turks after the treaty of peace stipulated on 7 March 1573, inc. 'Conclusa la pace col Signor Turco, et publicatala nell'Illustrissimo Consiglio di Pregadi l'anno 1573. li 4 d'April[...]', expl. 'la partita Nostra fu differita per li 27. di Febraro ... 43 giornate fino a Corfù patendo incommodi notabilissimi d'ogni sorte'; - (b) detailed account (ff. 26-105v) of the town of Constantinople and the Ottoman court, the costumes of the Turks, their military forces and economy, inc. 'Dirò hora del sito della Città di Costantinopoli', expl. 'che sia certo non potersi in alcun tempo unire à suoi danni'. Other copies of the text in Add. 10212 and 16543, ff. 3-61v.
