RELAZIONI RELATING TO CONSTANTINOPLE, ITALY AND THE PAPAL COURT; Account of the Conclave for the Election of Gregory XIV; 18th cent. Italian and Latin. With table of contents (f. 1), a note (f. 43) 'Oh che Cojoneria se credete, che questa Bugiarata risia' in a calligraphic hand, and an ink drawing (f. 44) representing a tree. The MS. is described by Foligno, anno 6, t. xii (1906), pt. i, no. cxvi, pp. 199-200. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford with shelfmark 'L/17/D' (front pastedown). '174' in pencil on upper left corner of armorial bookplate. Purchased, together with Add. 8644, 8647, 8650, and 8655, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 174 (part).
Paper; ff. 90+ii, plus 3 unfoliated interleaved blanks. Composite MS, British Museum arrangement. 193 x 143mm. Two Italian hands: (a) arts 1-5; - (b) art. 6. 18th-cent. quarter binding of vellum with marbled paper covers.

1. ff. 2-24v. 'Relatione di Costantinopoli del Signor Maffeo Venieri Venetiano da lui medesimo ultimamente riformata l'anno 1583'; 1583. Inc. (f. 3) 'Del sito di Costantinopoli sono le qualita maravigliose la grandezza'. The title is followed by a later note 'codix [sic] Iste Rarus est / Inedito tutto non Mai Stampato'. Other copies of the text in Add. 48108 (Yelverton MS. 120), art. 2 (ff. 18-51v); Eg. 1087, pp. 632-710 (ff. 302-342); Lansdowne 840 B, art. 3 (ff. 45-66). Closely related to the 'Relazione dell'Impero Ottomano dell'anno 1579' printed in Albèri, s. iii, v. i (Florence, 1840), pp. 437-468.
2. ff. 25-36v. 'Relatione delli Principati, e Potentati dell'Italia con loro forze, et entrate', relazione of military forces and finances of variuos Italian states, namely the Papacy, the territories under the King of Spain, Venice, Genua, Lucca, Savoy, Tuscany, Mantua, Modena, Parma and Urbino; [before 1618?]. Inc. (f. 26) 'La Provincia d'Italia è divisa in ondeci Principati'. Other copies of the text in Add. 18660, ff. 45-61, and 48148 (Yelverton MS. 160), art. 1 (ff. 2-24; with different explicit, written after 1618).
3. ff. 37-42v. 'Breve relatione della Corte del Pontefice Romano, delli Tribunali di Roma et suo governo, delli Cardinali et loro dignità et offitij, dell'entrate della Sede Apostolica et sue forze, d'onde possono cavar danari li Pontefici nelli bisogni, et quanto circonda il Stato della Chiesa'; n.d. Inc. (f. 38) 'La Gran Corte di Roma è stata sempre, et è hoggidì fondata'.
4. ff. 45-74v. 'Conclave in cui a 5 di Decembre 1590 fu creato Sommo Pontefice Gregorio XIV. chiamato papa Nicolo della famiglia Sfondrata Milanese Vescovo di Cremona et Cardinale fece 5 Cardinali et morì a 15 di ottobre 1591. essendo stato Papa x mesi et x dì. fu Sedia vacante 13 giorni, a cui successe Innocentio Nono.'; [after 1591]. Inc. (f. 46) 'Giusto desiderio veramente et laudabile curiosità'. Preceded (f. 45v) by a list of Cardinals created by Gregory XIV, and followed (ff. 74-74v) by a list of Cardinals attending the conclave. Joannis Antonij Reitani Siculi Panormitani Sacre Theologie Doctoris de adventu Paulli Apostoli Messanam, Bacchylo episcopo a divo Paullo Messane imposito, deque epistola, quam a Virgine conscriptam autumant / Exaltissima Censura, et Judicium / Ad Reverendum ad modum Patrem Octavium Caetanum a Societate Jesu ecclesiastice Sicule historie accuratissimum scriptorem', account of the arrival of St. Paul the Apostle at Messina, written by the Sicilian priest and theologian Giovanni Antonio Reitano (d. 1640) and presented to the Jesuit historian Ottavio Caietani (1566-1620); [before 1620]. Latin. Inc. (f. 76) 'Ex viris illis sex, qui tunc pectus acriter fodiunt'. The text is preceded by a letter in Italian that the Virgin allegedly consigned to the ambassadors of Messina for their people, entitled (f. 75v) 'Exemplar epistolae, quam falso Virgini Messanenses ascribunt ex Josepho bonfiglio Messanensi, Alphonso Villegos, et Paullo Ferrella Italico sermone exaratum prout in ipsis habetur, inc. 'Maria Vergine figliuola di Gioachim ... a tutti gl'habitatori di Messina desidera salute ... Maria Vergine conferma la presente scrittura di sua mano'. The work was printed by Francesco Baronio Manfredi in Vindicata veritas Panormitana (Venetiis: ad Candentis Salamandrae, 1629); see A.
