RELAZIONE OF CONSTANTINOPLE; 17th cent. Italian. Imperfect. Description of the Sultan's Palace and life in the Seraglio followed by a brief account of religious customs of Turkish people. Inc. (f. 2) '...ancora. Questa è posta nel piano d'un Cortile in Isola', expl. (f. 115) 'si come tutto ho detto ancora di sopra in altro luogo / Il Fine'. A brief note follows (f. 115v) in which the author asks for two quiet months after such a long journey, inc. 'Haverei altre cose a dirvi ... augurandovi ogni bene posciate desiderare dal Cielo. State Sani. / Devotissimo ... Servo / G. F. B. / Il Fine'. Engraved architectural frontispiece with putti, ox skull and mask (f. 1). The MS. is described by Foligno, anno 8, t. xv (1908), pt. i, no. cciii, p. 217. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '174' in pencil in top left corner of f. 1. Purchased, together with Add. 8644, 8647, 8648, and 8655, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 174 (part).
Paper; ff. 114, plus 3 unfoliated blanks after f. 1. Missing two leaves at beginning. Old foliation in ink 3-115 (ff. 2-114). 210 x 158mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. Ink marks throughout, which may indicate a possible use as the exemplar for a printed edition of the text.
