Italian. Copies. A collection of 113 despatches sent to Doges Silvestro Valier and Alvise II Mocenigo and to the Venetian Senate. They cover the period 21 July 1699 - 9 May 1704 when Lorenzo Soranzo was Ambasciatore Straordinario at Constantinople. From 4 July 1703 most are sent in conjunction with Ascanio Giustinian, the new Venetian bailo at Constantinople (1703-1710). Also included are copies of letters of credit issued by Soranzo in favour of Venetian citizens. The MSS. are described by Foligno, anno 6, t. xii (1906), pt. ii, no. cxxxiv, pp. 335-336. Armorial bookplates of 5th Earl of Guilford (front pastedown of each volume). '358' in pencil in top right corners of f. 1 of each volume. Purchased, together with Add. 8645, 8649, 8651, and possibly 8646, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 358 (part).
Paper. Two volumes. 294 x 204mm. Old 'running numbers' in roman numerals in ink 'i.x.c.-c.iii' at top right corner of each leaf changing according to the year ('i.x.c.' for 1699; 'c' for 1700), possibly relating to the organisation of despatches in the Venetian national archive beginning with the year 1600. Each despatch numbered in the left margin at beginning. Two Italian hands.
