EMMANUELE DE GREGORIO: Ristretto on the establishment of the Coptic Catholic Patriarch in Alexandria of Egypt; 1824. Italian. Copy. The ristretto sent to the Holy Congregation of the Propaganda Fide by Cardinal de Gregorio, Secretary of the Holy Congregation of Religious Immunity and of the Tridentine Council, concerns the establishment on 15 Aug. 1824 of the Coptic Catholic (Uniate) Patriarchate of Alexandria by Pope Leo XII and at request of Mehemet Ali (1770-1849), Pasha of Egypt. The appointed Patriarch was the Apostolic Vicar Maximus Joed, Bishop of Uthina. However Joed could never assume the position because of the strong opposition from Abraham Cashoor, an Egyptian student at the Roman Jesuit College and also newly consacrated Archbishop of Memphis by the pope: cf. Catholic Encyclopedia, vol. v (1913), p. 356. For Cardinal De Gregorio see DBI, 36 (1988), pp. 212-215.
