CAMILLO PORZIO: Chronicle of the Neapolitan revolt in 1547; 3rd quarter of 16th cent. Italian. Copy, 18th cent. A chronicle of the riots caused by the attempt of the Spanish Viceroy Don Pedro Alvarez de Toledo, Marqués de Villafranca, of introducing the Tribunal of Inquisition in Naples in 1547. At the time the author of the present chronicle, Camillo Porzio (1526-1580), was chancellor in Naples. His account of the events is the first book of a work entitled Istoria d'Italia, which Porzio abandoned around 1572 leaving a second book for the years 1547-1552 an unfinished draft. The Istoria remained unfinished and unpublished until 1839, when it was printed in Naples by A. Gervasio as L'Istoria d'Italia nell'anno MDXLVII (see E. Pontieri, "Camillo Porzio storico", in Archivio storico per le province napoletane, n.s., 36 (1957), pp. 127-161, esp. pp. 127 and 135; 37 (1958), pp. 121-179, esp. pp. 165-167, 171-175). Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford with shelfmark 'L/16/E' (front pastedown). '242' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8662, 8664, 8667, 8668, 8669, 8673, 8677, 8678, 8679, and 8680-8681, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 242 (part).
