FRANCESCO ZAZZERA: Diary of events in Naples 1616-1623; early 17th cent. Italian, Spanish and Latin. Copy. The diary is divided into two sections. The first section (art. 1) describes the events relating to the viceroyship of Pedro Téllez y Girón, Duke of Osuna (1616-March 1620) and his subsequent imprisonment, with only a brief note at the end relating his death in prison in Sept. 1624. The second section (art. 2) describes the events under the governments of Cardinal Gaspare Borgia (1620) and Cardinal Antonio de Zapata (1620-1622) to May 1623. Added title (f. 1) 'Giornali delle cose notabili succedute in Napoli e Regno sotto il Governo del Duca d'Ossuna; e delli Cardinali Borgia, e Zapatta Vicere / Incominciando da 7 di Luglio, del 1616 sino ai 2 di Maggio, del 1623 / Compilati dal Signor Francesco Zazzera Napolitano'. One leaf inserted (f. 142) with a note in Italian on the price of two different MSS., one of which dated 1699. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford with shelfmark 'L/16/E' (front pastedown). '242' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8662, 8664, 8665, 8667, 8669, 8673, 8677, 8678, 8679, and 8680-8681, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 242 (part).
1. ff. 2-163. 'Giornali del Governo di Napoli del Signor Duca d'Ossuna. Scritti dal Signor Francesco Zazzera Napolitano. da' 7 del mese di Luglio del 1616' with later addition 'al 1623'. Inc. (f. 2) 'Anno primo del Governo / Cominciaremo in buon'hora i Giornali dell'Eccellentissimo Signore Don Pietro Girone Duca d'Ossuna, chiamato per ordine di sua Maestà Cattolica per Vicerè di questo Regno di Napoli', expl. 'con la sua morte dà forsennato, fine alle sue stravaganze', with later addition 'nel di 24 settembre 1624'. The text describes in four parts the four years in which the Duke of Osuna served as viceroy. It includes: (a) a letter (ff. 57v-58) of Pope Paul V to the Duke of Osuna, dated 19 April 1617; - (b) correspondence (ff. 108v-115v) between Neapolitan delegates and Philip III of Spain, dated 30 Sept.-3 Oct. 1618; - (c) manifest (ff. 143-145) addressed to the people of Naples published by Giulio Genovino on 2 June 1620; - (d) message (ff. 150v-151) of Cardinal Borgia to the Duke of Osuna, in Spanish, dated 3 June 1620.

3. ff. 175v-177v. Table of the families mentioned in the text. Inc. 'Indice delle Famiglie che sono nominate in questo Volume / Acquaviva', expl. 'Zappatta / Finis'.
