RELAZIONI OF NAPLES AND TENEDOS, a Letter by Francis I of Modena, and the Will of the town of Valenza; 1656. Italian. Copies. The MS. is entitled (f. 1) 'Relatione della Peste di Napoli fatta li 10 Giugno 1656'. This title is followed by three titles added by a later hand relating to arts. 2-4. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '59' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8663, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 59 (part).
1. ff. 1-27v. 'Relatione della Peste di Napoli fatta li 10 Giugno 1656', relazione concerning the plague in Naples, possibly addressed to the king of Spain; 1656. Inc. (f. 2) 'Credevo in verità di dover tacere, e non pensar più à novelle', expl. 'e pure so ogni cosa in tante miserie, e parte di felicità / Napoli 10 Giugno 1656'.
2. ff. 28-35. 'Relatione dell'Impresa dell'Isola del Tenedo acquistata dalli Venetiani alli 13 di Luglio dell'anno 1656', relazione of Tenedos to the Venetian Senate; 1656. Inc. (f. 29) 'Relatione dell'Impresa del Tenedo / Ottenuto col favor di Dio da quest'Armata il total disfacimento dell'Ottomana', expl. 'fuorchè à quella parte ove è bagnata dal Mare'.
3. ff. 36-39. 'Lettera scritta dal Serenissimo di Modena all'Elettori dell'Imperio li 12 Settembre 1656', letter by Francesco I d'Este, Duke of Modena, to an Imperial Elector defending his attack on the town of Valenza; 1656. Inc. (f. 37) 'La parte, che si deve a Vostri Signori ne gli affari pertinenti al sacro Imperio', expl. 'e le bacio per fine cordialissimamente le mani. Dal Campo sotto Valenza / Li 12 settembre 1656 / D.V.A.'.
4. ff. 40-46v. 'Testamento fatto dalla Fortezza di Valenza per la sua caduta in mano del Serenissimo di Modena / l'anno 1656', will of the town of Valenza conquered by Francesco I d'Este, Duke of Modena; 1656. Inc. (f. 41) 'Considerando Valenza, che la mutatione dell'essere è necessaria', expl. 'vada all'Ottomano Cielo, dove al sicuro vedrà ecclissata quella Luna'. Published on 5 Sept. 1656 in presence of various witnesses and signed by the Imperial notary Francesco Gonerio.
Paper; ff. 46+ii, plus five unfoliated interleaved blanks. 266 x 201mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. One Italian hand. Late 16th-cent. binding of vellum on limp pasteboards.
