NICOLÒ CARAVITA: Defence of Alessandro Riccardi; 1695. Italian and Greek. Copy, 18th cent. Nicolò Caravita (1647-1717) was a Neapolitan jurist and man of letters. With this defence he obtained the acquittal of Alessandro Riccardi accused of assaulting the treasurer of the Cathedral in Naples. Inc. (f. 5) 'O non mai, o molto di rado avviene che nel Mondo succeda cosa', expl. (f. 50v) 'acciocche l'unico mio fratello sia dannato a morte. Il dì primo di Giugno 1695 = Don Niccolò Caravita'. The text is divided into three chapters and includes sentences in Greek. It is preceded by an anonymous Life of Caravita, written after Caravita's death, with many corrections, inc. (f. 1) 'Nacque a di 25 di Maggio dell'anno 1647', expl. (4v) 'per lui sarà bastevole fregio ed elogio'. Caravita founded the Accademia Palatina in Naples in 1698 together with Viceroy Luis de la Cerda, Duke of Medinaceli; see DBI, 19 (1976), pp. 676-679. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford with shelfmark 'L/16/B' (front pastedown). '60' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8593 and 8596, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 60 (part).
