PAPERS RELATED TO THE CONSPIRACY OF MACCHIA; 1701-1702. Italian, Spanish and Latin. A collection of legal papers relating to the proceedings against the Neapolitan nobles who in 1701 conspired against the Spanish monarchy in favour of Archduke Charles of Austria. The conspiracy was named after its leader, Tiberio Carafa di Chiusano, Prince of Macchia. The MS. is entitled (f. 1) 'Fatti occorsi nel procedimento Contro li Rei della Congiura di Macchia / Qual fu, ed esser debba il modo di procedersi contro li tutti Rei, esclusa la pratica dipendente dalla Costit. penam eorum'. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford with shelfmark 'L/16/B' (front pastedown). '62' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with 8625, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 62 (part).

3. ff. 35-66. Copy of the sentences from the official registers, 28 Sept. - 23 Dec. 1701. Spanish, Latin and Italian. Inc. (f. 37) 'La parte, che si deve a Vostri Signori ne gli affari pertinenti al sacro Imperio', expl. 'Ideo fuit contumax reputatus, et ad fidem = Julius Valente actorum Magistrus'.
Paper; ff. 66+iii, plus one unfoliated interleaved blank. 266 x 201mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. Three Italian hands. Top margin of first six leaves defective with loss of text, partially rewritten below by a later hand.
