GIUSEPPE BORGIA: Relazione of Naples; 1734. Italian. Copy. Relazione of the state of affairs of Naples in 1734. Naples had just been declared an independent kingdom with the election of Charles VII of Bourbon, son of Philip V of Spain. Title (f. 1) 'Relazione dello Stato del Regno di Napoli e suo Governo / Scritta da Giuseppe Borgia de' Duchi di Valmezzana Avvocato Napoletano nell'Anno MDCCXXXIV'. Inc. (f. 2) 'Dello Stato del Regno di Napoli sebbene molto si sia scritto', expl. (f. 112v) 'che riguardavano il sollievo, e beneficio del Regno'. Included are chapters on the Neapolitan viceroyalty, magistrates and courts of justice, the baronage, the ecclesiastical jurisdiction and its abuses, the royal treasury and its state of affairs, the università or Council of citizens, banks, trades, and the coinage. The text ends with nine suggestions for innovations or espedienti to create a happier and healthier state and one chapter on espedienti introduced by the Austrian government in order to improve the royal treasury.
