GIUSEPPE VELLA: Esposto di Verità; circa 1798. Italian. Copy. A plea sent to Ferdinand IV, King of Naples, by Abbot Giuseppe Vella. The Abbot had been imprisoned after he had been accused of forgery by Alfonso Ajroldi, archbishop of Eraclea. Ajroldi had in fact realised that Vella was the author rather than merely the translator of the Arabic codex that he and Ajroldi had published together both in Latin and in Italian (see Codice diplomatico di Sicilia sotto il governo degli Arabi (Palermo, 1789-1792, 6 vols.), of which B.L. copy 179.i.15-20). Vella published another work entitled Libro del Consiglio di Egitto (Palermo, 1793), always pretending to have translated it from Arabic (B.L. copy 181.h.5). On the question see M.E. The plea is divided into two parts and is preceded (ff. 2-3v) by a dedicatory letter to King Ferdinand IV and Queen Mary Caroline of Austria, inc. 'Sacre Reali Maestà / Egli è un effetto costante dell'amore'. The text is followed (ff. 105v-106) by a list of items in the kufic collection of Giuseppe Vella, inc. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford with shelfmark 'L/16/B' (front pastedown). '392' in pencil in top right corner of Guilford's bookplate. Purchased, together with Add. 8702 and 8732, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 392 (part).
1. ff. 6-54. Ragguaglio storico, account of events. / ...Quis talia fando Temperet a lacrimis?'. Text divided into 21 paragraphs with extensive footnotes. Preceded (ff. 4-5v) by a table of contents, inc. 'Indice de' Paragrafi del ragguaglio Storico'.
2. ff. 55-104v. 'Ragionamento in difesa del Sacerdote Giuseppe Vella Abate di San Pancrazio'. Inc. (f. 57) 'Un uomo onorato da' Grandi', expl. 'onde era stato in prima onorato. Ho detto / Obest plerumque ... probant judicatum vident. Cic. de Nat. Deor. lib. i'. Text divided into 4 chapters with extensive footnotes. Preceded (ff. 55v-56v) by a table of contents, inc. 'Indice del Ragionamento...'.
