BARTOLOMEO CHIOCCARELLO: Summary of the Archive of the Royal Jurisdiction in the Kingdom of Naples; circa 1635. Italian and Latin. Copies. The present MS. contains the Indice all'Archivio della Real Giurisdizione published around 1635 by Bartolomeo Chioccarello, archivist of the Regia Camera della Sommaria between 1607-1635. In 1626 Chioccarello had been commissioned by the duke of Caivano, secretary to the kingdom under Philip III and his viceroy Antonio Alvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alba, to unify the archives of the Royal Jurisdiction. Chioccarello published the results of his work in 1631 under the title Archivio della Real Giurisdizione, collecting all the archival records concerning the relations of the Neapolitan Kingdom with the Papal Curia and various religious institutions, mainly with regard to ecclesiastical privileges and immunities and the Tribunal of the Inquisition. He then compiled the Indice all'Archivio as a quick reference. The autograph manuscript of the Indice is now Naples, Bibl. Teologica 'S. Tommaso', ms. A. 6. 39. The present MS. is entitled (f. 1) 'Archivium scripturarum regiae Jurisdictionis'. The text is divided into 18 books. Table (ff. 1-3) of contents in Latin, inc. 'Hos libros continet His Titulis Adiectis / Primum Volumen / De Investituris Regni Neapolitani'. The text was printed with variations by the priest Angelo Rocchi under the pseudonym Giovan Carlo Chino, Archivio della Reggia Giurisdizione del Regno di Napoli, ristretto in indice compendioso (Venice [but Naples], 1721); B.L. copy 5373.e.4. For Chioccarello see DBI, 25 (1981), pp. 4-8. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. Purchased from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot no. undetected.
