CHARLES VII OF NAPLES: Points of negotiation for a Concordat between the Holy See and the Kingdom of Naples; 1739. Italian. Copy. The MS. contains the instructions given by Charles VII, King of Naples, to his plenipotentiary ministers for negotiating the proposal of Pope Clement XII of a Concordat between the Holy See and the Kingdom of Naples on ecclesiastical issues. The negotiations had started in 1737 and the Concordat was eventually signed on 2 June 1741. The royal plenipotentiary ministers were Cardinal Troiano Acquaviva d'Aragona, Spanish ambassador to the Holy See, and Mons. It had been prepared by the Secretary of State of Ecclesiastical Affairs of Naples, Marquis Gaetano Maria Brancone, who dated and signed it (f. 187v) 'Napoli 13 Settembre del 1739 / Don Gaetano Maria Brancone'; for Brancone see DBI, 14 (Rome, 1972), pp. 5-7. (f. 187v) 'ne entrarsi in altre novelle dispute, e discorsi'. Table of contents on f. 1. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford with shelfmark 'L/19/C' (front pastedown).
