PEDRO LÓPEZ DE AYALA: Chronicle of the reign of Enrique III of Castile and León, 1390-1406; mid 17th cent. Spanish. Copy. The present text is a transcription of 'La Crónica del Rey Enrique III' compiled by Pedro López de Ayala, statesman, poet and chronicler. Owing to his responsibilities as a royal official and his subsequent retirement to a Hieronymite monastery in Laorcuera, Miranda de Ebro, in 1399, López de Ayala terminated the chronicle at 1396 (ff. 1-132). Entries for the remaining years of Enrique III's reign (ff. 132-135v) were compiled by an unknown individual from the works of other authors, including Diego Ortiz de Zúñiga's 'Annales ecclesiásticos y seculares de la muy noble y muy leal ciudad de Sevilla, […], desde el año de 1246 hasta el de 1671', printed in 1797-6. Other copies of the chronicle are in Egerton 294 and 295. (f. 135v) 'La suma de las dos guerras que este Rey don enrrique tuvo la una con Portugal, e la otra con el Rey de Granada e las causas dellas ponelo fernan Perez de Guzman con sus claros barones en la vida deste Rey don Enrrique tercero dondelo allaras juntamente con otras cosas que del sumariamente escribe' The chronicle is followed by (ff. 136-142) a short résumé of Pedro López de Ayala's chronicle of Enrique III written by an unidentified 16th-cent. hand and (ff. 142-143) transcripts of the epitaphs taken from the tombs of Enrique II and Queen Juana, Juan I and Queen Leonor, and Enrique III and Queen Catalina, as well as miscellaneous genealogical information relating to 15th and 16th-cent. Spanish monarchy. The MS. is described in Gayangos, I, pp. 204-5. Armorial bookplate of Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, with shelfmark 'L/17/B' (front pastedown). '253' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8682, 8683, 8692, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 253 (part).
