A collection of texts relating to the reign of Philip II of Spain (1556-1598). Table of contents (f. 1) by a later hand. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '254' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8685, 8689, 8691, 8700, 8703, 8705, and 8708, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 254 (part).
1. ff. 2-24. 'Relatione Summaria del Cattolico Re Filippo 2do di Spagna'; n.d. Inc. (f. 3) 'Filippo Secondo di Austria Re di Spagna nacque di Carlo Quinto Imperatore', expl. 'che è quanto posso dire alla Serenità vostra circa la persona del Cattolico Re Filippo Secondo, e suo dominio e stati'.
2. ff. 25-66. 'Raggionamento Fatto da Filippo 2o Rè di Spagna à Filippo 3o suo figliolo come si debbia contenere tanto in tempo di Pace, come di Guerra'; n.d. Inc. (f. 26) 'Se bene chi vive à gli affanni et alle cure moleste', expl. 'che il correr l'apperto et imbelle Oriente come fece Alessandro magno'.

'La Monarchia di Spagna crescente e Calante', relazione of Spain celebrating the reign of Philip IV of Spain and his minister Luis Mendez de Haro y Zúñiga, Marqués of Carpio (mentioned on ff. 71, 129v) and their victories in the Thirty Year War and in the war with France (1635-1659); n.d. Inc. (f. 68) 'Signor mio la sfera che da il moto à gl'intelletti del mondo', expl. 'la conservazione della fede Cattolica e la Pace fra Prencipi Cristiani'. Luis de Haro was prime minister and favourite of Philip IV between 1643-1661.
Paper; ff. 130+ii, plus one interleaved unfoliated blank after f. 24 and two after f. 66. Old foliation in ink 1-129 (ff. 2-130), excluding blanks. 250 x 188mm. Two Italian hands. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. 17th-cent. binding of vellum.
