INQUISITORIAL PROCEEDINGS AGAINST FRAY BARTOLOMÉ CARRANZA DE MIRANDA DE ARGA, ARCHBISHOP OF TOLEDO; 1567-1576. Spanish and Latin. Partly autograph. Notarial records relating to the transfer of the trial of Carranza to Rome in 1567 and its proceedings (1567-76). Carranza was accused of Lutheran heresy in 1558 and imprisoned in the Castle of Sant'Angelo, Valladolid, in 1559 by the Spanish Inquisition on the basis of ambiguous passages in his Commentaries on the Christian Cathechism (Antwerp, 1558). Title (f.1) 'Manuale actorum Romae factorum ab anno 1567 usque ad annum 1576, in causa Reverendissimo Bartholomei Archiepiscopi Toletani. In quo sunt etiam Inventaria processuum et scripturarum'. The MS. is described in E. Llamas-Martínez, Documentos Inquisitoriales Españoles del siglo XVI existentes en el museo británico (Madrid, 1975), pp. 79-80 and discussed in E. Llamas-Martínez, 'Catálogo de fuentes del proceso del Arzobispo Carranza, según un manuscrito del British Museum', Miscelánea Manuel Cuervo López (Salamanca, 1970), pp. 255-269 and J. Ignacio Tellechea Idígoras, El Proceso Romano del Arzobispo Carranza (1567-1576) (Rome, 1988). Stamp of the Colonna library 'Libraria Colonna' in red on f. 12. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '84' in pencil in upper left corner of inside front cover of original binding (f. 1). 1. f. 1-2. Original 16th-cent. full calf-leather binding with flap incorporated. The number '266' relates to the number assigned to the manuscript in the inventory on f. 109.
2. f. 3-5v. Notarial account of preparations undertaken for the transfer to Rome of documents pertaining to Carranza's trial in Spain; 17 Feb. 1567, Madrid. Inc. 'En la villa de Madrid a diez y siete dias de el mes de hebrero'. A transcription of the original, which is held at the Archivo Histórico Nacional in Madrid (Inquisición, 4446, no 2) is printed in J. Ignacio Tellechea Idígoras, 'Inventario del proceso del Arzobispo Carranza al tiempo de su traslada a Roma (1567)', Academia de la Historia Boletín, CLXIV, 1, 1969, pp. 97-118, (116-118).

A transcription of the original, which is held at the Archivo Histórico Nacional in Madrid (Inquisición, 4446, no 2) is printed in J. Ignacio Tellechea Idígoras, 'Inventario del proceso del Arzobispo Carranza, pp. 102-110. Many of the documents listed in the inventory are transcribed in J. Ignacio Tellechea Idígoras, Fray Bartolomé Carranza, Documentos históricos I-VII (Madrid, 1962-94).
4. ff. 12-95r. Diary of the trial of Carranza in Rome, containing a summary of the proccedings of each session held between 2 June 1567 and 14 April 1576. Inc. 'In nomine sanctae et individuae trinitatis'. The diary is written in two hands, the second being that of Alonso Castellón (ff. 64-94v) and is signed by Alonso Castellón, Sebastián de Landeta, Pedro Fabri and Juan Antonio Romano de Perpendiis, Secretaries of the Holy Inquisition. Incorporated in the diary (ff. 36-44) is an inventory of additional documents relating to the trial of Carranza sent to Rome from Spain on 13 May and 13 Nov. 1568. The diary concludes with Pope Gregory XIII's compromise verdict, issued 14 April 1576 (ff. 92-94v) and a report of the death of Carranza on 2 May 1576 (f. 94v). The contents of the diary are partly transcribed and partly summarised in J. Ignacio Tellechea Idígoras, El Proceso Romano del Arzobispo Carranza, pp. 69-166.
5. ff. 95-109. A revised inventory of the documents relating to the trial of Carranza, compiled on 3 May 1576 following the death of Carranza. Inc.
