RELAZIONI OF SPAIN AND PORTUGAL; circa 1624-1672. Italian, partly in Latin. Copies. A collection of papers concerning the relations of the Papal Curia with Spain and Portugal before and after the election in 1640 of John Duke of Braganza as King John IV of Portugal. The collection has probably been put together by a scribe in the Papal Curia. Arts. 3-5 concern the refusal of Pope Urban VIII to grant a public audience to Dom Miguel de Portugal, Bishop of Lamego, Portuguese Ambassador to Rome between Nov. 1641-Dec. 1642. The same arts. describe in great detail the violent dispute occurred on 20 Aug. 1642 between Dom Miguel and Don Pedro Fajardo Zúñiga y Requesens, Marqués de Los Vélez, Ambassador to Rome of Philip IV of Spain in 1642-1643. For other accounts of the same event see Add. 8711, art. 4, ff. 34-38v (by Pantaleão Rodrigues Pacheco), and 8712, art. 4, ff. 42-58; Eg. 1672, ff. 357-362v (by the Marquis de Fontenay, French Ambassador to Rome, dated 20 Aug. 1642); on the issue of recognising the new king of Portugal and granting papal audience to his Ambassador see Add. 8711 (address to Urban VIII by Pantaleão Rodrigues Pacheco), and 8712, arts. 2-10. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '390' in pencil in top of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8731, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 390 (part). Contents include:
1. ff. 1-50. 'Relazione fatta alla Maestà del Rè Cattolico l'Anno 1637. Di tutti li Trattati seguiti durante l'indisposizione di Sua Santità Papa Urbano Ottavo, dando forma e regola al medemo [sic] Rè di meglio governare li suoi Ministri nella Corte di Roma', relazione to Philip IV concerning the period of Urban VIII's illness; 1637. Inc. 'Le Machine, e li Trattati seguiti durante l'indisposizione di Sua Santità', expl. 'che confermi la Sua Real Persona come tutti desideriamo. Di Roma li 20 d'Agosto 1637'.
2. ff. 51-107. 'Instruzzione a Monsignor Pallotta Ministro Apostolico alla Corona di Portogallo', instructions given to the newly appointed nuncio to Portugal Giovanni Battista Pallotta, possibly by Cardinal Francesco Barberini; [1624]. Inc. 'Il Regno di Portogallo ben che non habbia li suoi antichi Regi', expl. 'et Io l'accompagno con effettuare preghiere per la sua felicità'. Giovanni Battista Pallotta was collettore to Portugal between 1624-1626.
3. ff. 107-175v. 'Relazione [with later addition: mandata dal Signor Cardinale Barberino] al Nuntio Apostolico Residente in Portogallo sopra le controversie nate in Roma per causa delle Visite, Ricevimento, e Condotta del Vescovo di Lamego Ambasciatore di Sua Maestà', relazione by Cardinal Francesco Barberini to Girolamo Battaglia, papal nuncio to Portugal; [1642]. Inc. 'Nostro Signore (che Dio guardi) Urbano 8o vuole che Vostra Signoria Illustrissima resti pienamente informata', expl. 'si è compiaciuta di dargli la libertà con la sola pena dell'esilio da tutto lo stato ecclesiastico, essendo già stato terminato il Processo, Copia del contenuto si manda a Vostra Signoria ch'è il seguente'. Girolamo Battaglia was collettore to Portugal between 1640-1646 (or 1647).
4. ff. 176-189v. 'Ristretto del Processo del Caso ha il Signor Marchese de los Veles et il Vescovo di Lamego', summary of the legal proceedings against the Portuguese and Spanish Ambassadors; [1642]. Inc. 'Primieramente si prova che il Signor Marchese de los Veles Ambasciadore di Spagna habbia mostrato mala volontà', expl. 'mostrandosi il Rè poco sodisfatto della loro condotta in Roma'.
5. ff. 189-273. 'Altra Relazione al Nuntio di Portogallo per parte del Signor Cardinal Barberino', relazione from Cardinal Francesco Barberini to Girolamo Battaglia; [1642]. Inc. 'Non fu di molto venuto in Roma il Marchese de los Vales, quando all'improvviso una mattina Monsignor Vescovo di Lamego', expl. 'Altrimenti chi lo riceve non solo pare d'approvare una detestabile Ribellione, ma ancora di promoverla e ratificarla'. Including (ff. 251v-270) a letter from the Bishop of Lamego to the Sacred College, in Latin, datable 1640 (see f. 253v).
6. ff. 273 (additional sheet)-282v. 'Relazione di Monsignor Castracani Ministro e Collettore di Urbano Ottavo in Portogallo sopra il Successo Aquiso d'una subitanea ribellione e successiva elezzione del Novo Rè Giovanni Quarto che prima era duca de Braganza li 8 Dicembre 1640 per cagione della chiamata fatta dal Rè Cattolico d'alcuni Nobili Portoghesi sul motivo apparente di conferir loro alcuni secreti di materie di stato, quali insospettiti per un'avviso loro dato da altri Nobili ...' [amended and completed by a later hand, ending 'il Papa a tale avviso si risolse di ricevere privatamente l'Ambasciatore Portoghese colla promessa d'ammetterlo publicamente col carattere e colle formalità d'Ambasciatore come gli altri ministri Regij'], relazione of Portugal by Alessandro Castracani, papal nuncio to Portugal; [1640]. Inc. 'Giunse dunque la relazione dal Collettore di Portogallo', expl. 'essendosi il Papa valsuto degli esempij di tutti gl'altri Prencipi, da' quali sono stati ricevuti i Ministri di Portogallo con caratteri speciosi'. Alessandro Castracani was collettore to Portugal between 1634-1640.
7. ff. 283-295. 'Relazione delle differenze passate trà l'Eminentissimo Signor Cardinale Orsino, e il Residente della Regina Madre nel quale [cancelled and substituted by a later hand: 'quale trovandosi allora nella [...]llare età Carlo II di Lei Figlio era sua Tutrice e Curatrice e Reggente della Monarchia di Spagna. In questa relazione'] si mostra la poca ragione, che ha havuta Sua Eminenza di venire all'affronto fatto à detto Residente, e vi è un breve discorso sopra le prerogative de Residenti de Prencipi', relazione to Queen Regent Mariana of Austria from the Spanish Ambassador to Rome Johann Eberhard von Neidhart concerning his a dispute with Cardinal Vincenzo Maria Orsini; [1672]. Inc. 'Dovendo Io riferire l'affronto fattomi dal Cardinal Orsino come à Residente della Regina Madre', expl. 'lo stava aspettando, come si dice al varco per fargli l'affronto, come fece'. Neidhart was Ambassador to Rome between 1672-1677.
