COLLECTION OF INSTRUCTIONS TO THE SPANISH AMBASSADOR IN ROME; mid 17th cent. Italian and Spanish. Copies. The MS. is described in Gayangos, I, p. 840. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '392' in pencil in upper right corner of front pastedown and '10' in brown ink in lower left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8675, 8732, 8763 and 8777, from R.H. Evans, 10 Dec. 1830, lot 392 (part).
1. ff. 2-19v. 'Instruttione all Ambasciatore Cattolico in Roma Circa il modo di negotiare per il buon servicio de correnti affari in questa corte', treatise on diplomacy sent to the Spanish Ambassador in Rome; circa 1640. Inc. 'Si come vostra Eccelenza ha in questa corte di Roma da trattare diversi negotiatione con diversi persone'.
2. ff. 22-40v. 'Instrutione Data dal Conte Duca d'Olivares al Marchese de los Veles Destinato Ambasciatore alla Corti di Roma', instructions from Gaspar de Guzmán, Conde-duque de Olivares to Pedro Fajardo de Zuñiga y Requeséns, Marqués de los Vélez y de Molina, appointed Ambassador in Rome; n.d. Inc. 'La stima, che il Ré Cattolico mio S[igno]re fa' della persona di V.S. et il concetto'.
3. ff. 42-60. 'Instruzzione Lasciata dal Conte d'Ognate alli Ambasciatore che assisteranno nella Corte di Roma per la Maesta Cattolica et Il modo con che devono esercitar La Loro Ambasceria', instructions from Iñigo Veléz de Guevara y Tassis, Conde de Oñate to the Spanish Ambassador; circa 1648-1653. Inc. 'Si come vostra Eccelenza ha in questa corte di Roma da trattare diversi negotiatione con diversi persone'. The text is the same as that in art. 1, ff. 2-19v.

Paper; ff. 113 + ii. Old foliation in ink '1-108' (ff. 2-113), omitting blank ff. 20-21, 41, 61. 259 x 197mm. Horizontal catchwords on almost every page, some (ff. 42-60) lost due to cropping. Four 17th-cent. hands. Watermark of a star similar to Heawood 3880 (Italy, 1672). 17th-cent. binding of full vellum on pasteboards.
