SAVO MELLINI: Dispatches to Cardinals Altieri and Cibo, together with accounts of expenses; 1675-1678, 1685. Italian. Partly copies. A collection of dispatches and accounts of Savo Mellini, the papal nuncio to Spain from 30 Sept. 1675 to 8 Oct. 1685. The dispatches date 2 Oct. 1675 - 3 Feb. 1678. The are addressed to Cardinal Paluzzo Altieri, nephew of Pope Clement X (d. 22 July 1676) and acting as his prime minister, and to Cardinal Alderano Cibo, Secretary of State and Prime Minister of Pope Innocent XI (el. 21 Sept. 1676). They are copied in this letter-book probably from archival copies, and followed (ff. 628-692v) by original drafts of expenses accounts for Jan.-Oct. 1685. Title (f. 1) 'Minute di Lettere al Signor Cardinale Altieri. Dalli 2 Ottobre 1675 sino al 29 Maggio 1677', added by a later hand. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '586' in pencil in top of f. 1. Purchased from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 586 (part).

1. ff. 1-302. Dispatches to Cardinal Altieri; 2 Oct. 1675 - 5 Aug. 1676. Inc. (f. 2v) 'All'Eminentissimo Signor Cardinale Altieri 2 Ottobre 1675 Madrid / Prima di giungere à Saragoza m'accorsi', expl. 'Madrid 5 Agosto 1676 ... e d'introdurla anche ne gli altri suoi Colleghi, con che à Vostra Eccellenza Inchino'. Including (f. 26) the fragment of an autograph letter to Cardinal Altieri.
2. ff. 302-627. 'Registri di Lettere scritte alla Segreteria di Stato nel Pontificato d'Innocenzo XImo: già Cardinale Benedetto Odescalchi, creato Pontefice ai 22 di Settembre 1676 / Al Signor Cardinale Cybo eletto primo Ministro, e Segretario di Stato di Sua Santità', dispatches to Cardinal Cibo; 14 Oct. 1676-3 Feb. 1678. Inc. 'Madrid 14 ottobre 1676 / Da che intrapresi i Maneggi di questo Ministero sotto ', expl. 'Madrid 3 febbraio 1678 ... perche gli venga promessa la riconciliazione con la Sede Apostolica'.
3. ff. 628-692v. Original expenses accounts of the nunziatura of Spain; 2 Jan. 1685 - 6 Oct. 1685. Including (ff. 634, 643) two original alms receits, and a summary (f. 644) of expenses for the years 1675-1680.

Modern foliation in pencil 1-692 (followed here), repeating no. 303. Old pagination in ink 1-304 (ff. 2v-155), omitting f. 26, omitting no. 87, repeating no. 239. 308 x 208mm. Several Italian hands.
