Letters and papers of the Emperors Leopold I and Joseph I, Louis XIV of France, Charles III of Spain, Peter II of Portugal, Pope Clement XI, the Ambassadors at Rome Jean Baptiste René de Froulai, Count of Tessé (France), Count Leopold Joseph of Lamberg, and Ercole Turinetti, Marquis of Prié (the Emperor), and the Count of Melgar (Spain), the Auditor of the Rota Franz Karl von Kaunitz, the Papal Secretary of State Cardinal Fabrizio Paulucci, Cardinals Vincenzo Grimani, Gaspare Carpegna, Galeazzo Marescotti, Bandino Panciatichi, the Archbishop of Milan Cardinal Giuseppe Archinto, the Archbishop of Naples Cardinal Francesco Pignatelli, the Archbishop-Elector of Mainz Lothar Franz von Schönborn, Luis Francisco de la Cerda y Aragona Duke of Medina Celi, and others on the dispute between the Emperor and the King of France on the succession to the Kingdom of Spain. Similar, more extensive collections in Add. 16476, 16477. The MS. also includes (art. 13, ff. 253-281v) the instructions given to Annibale di Capua, Archbishop of Naples, when sent as papal legate to the coronation of Emperor Rudolph II (1576) and to Venice (1577-1578). Armorial bookplate of the 5th Earl of Guilford, with shelfmark 'L/17/E' (front pastedown). '87' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8391- 8393, 8660, 8721, 8722, 8723-8724, 8753, 8754, 8755, 8772, and possibly 8366, 8589 and 8727, from R.H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 87 (part).
