GIOVANNI ANTONIO RUZZINI: Despatches from Spain; 1750-1754. Italian. Copies. 214 dispatches from Giovanni Antonio Ruzzini to Doges Pietro Grimani (d. 7 March 1752) and Francesco Loredan (el. 18 March 1752) and the Venetian Senate, dated 1 May 1750 - 13 Aug. 1754. Ruzzini was the Venetian Ambassador to Spain between 27 Aug. 1750 (presentation of credentials) - 29 Oct. 1754. He was the son of Carlo Ruzzini, Doge of Venice (1732-1735), of whom a collection of dispatches from Constantinople is now Add. 8654. The MS. is entitled (f. 1) 'Dispazzi del N. H. Z. Antonio Ruzini Ambasciatore in Spagna da I Maggio 1750 sino' followed by later addition '21 Ottobre 1754'. Inc. (f. 2) 'No .1. / Sola / Serenissimo Prencipe / Porgo a Vostra Serenità, ed a Vostre Eccellenze la riverente notizia di aver io incamminati con la celeste benedizioni i primi passi verso al Real Corte di Spagna ... Padova, li 1 Maggio 1750', expl. (f. 293v) 'No. 214 / Sola / Serenissimo Principe / Dal partir della Squadra francese ... curvi per la calamità de' tempi, e per li pesi passati. Grazie / Madrid li 13 Agosto 1754. Giovanni Antonio Ruzini Ambasciatore'. The dispatches are probably copied from archival copies. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford with shelfmark 'L/16/C' (front pastedown). '332' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8590, 8654, and possibly Add. 8588, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 332 (part).
Paper; ff. 293, plus two unfoliated blanks after f. 100. Modern pencil foliation (followed here), omitting no. 255. Old pagination in ink 1-593 (ff. 2-293), including blanks, omitting nos. 191, 212-217, 355. 350 x 245mm. Each dispatch numbered in the left margin at beginning. One Italian hand.
