MISCELLANEOUS TRACTS AND PAPERS RELATING TO PORTUGAL AND THE PAPACY; 1577-1767. Italian and Latin. Copies, partly certified. Arts. 2-10, 12-14, 16-18 concern the papal refusal to recognise the legitimacy of the Portuguese Kings between 1640-1669 and the consequent denial by the Pope to receive their ambassadors and approve their nomination of bishops after the secession of the country from Spain. Arts. 19-22 relate to the negotiations for the concordat of 1737 between Pope Clement XII and King John V of Portugal on the papal approval of Portuguese bishops and the grant of the cardinal's hat to the Patriarchs of Lisbon. The concordat was signed by Fr. José Maria de Fonseca de Évora, Portuguese Ambassador to Rome, on 19 Dec. 1737, following the publication of the Papal bulla Inter Praecipuas, dated 17 Dec. 1737. Arts. 23-25 relate to the controversy over the Jesuit Order between Clement XIII and King Joseph I of Portugal. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford with shelfmark 'L/19/B' (front pastedown). '512' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8710, 8711, 8713, and 8714, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 512 (part).
Paper; ff. 283+ii, plus one unfoliated blank after ff. 115, 198, 266, and 267. Composite volume. The original numbering of items by letters 'x-mm' in ink in top right corner of first leaf of text suggests that the present MS. formed part of a larger miscellany. Arts. 13, 17-22 numbered in pencil '2-8' in top margin of first leaves. Modern pencil foliation (followed here), repeating nos. 184, 203, 215, 267. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf.
