RODOLFO PIO DI CARPI: Correspondence as papal nuncio to France; 1535-1537. Italian. Copies. A collection of 301 dispatches relating to France and the papal nunziatura of Rodolfo Pio di Carpi, bishop of Faenza (1500-1564). The dispatches are dated 4 Feb. 1535 - 2 June 1537, when Pio was the Nuncio of Pope Paul III Farnese to King Francis I of France. The collection includes the dispatches sent by Pio mainly to Ambrogio Ricalcati, secretary Paul III and chief of the Papal Chancery, and Ricalcati's replies. Extensive headings precede most dispatches recording all the recipients of the same message. Another copy of the correspondence is in Add. 38162, which also belonged to Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, and before him to the Colonna Library. Other copies in Bologna, Archivio Arcivescovile, Manoscritto di dispacci di Rodolfo Pio; Mombello, Imbersago (Como – Italy), Archivio Privato del Principe Pio Falcò, Sezione araldica, bolle e brevi, MS. in paper (possibly the MS. from which Add. 8715 was copied, as they share title and headings). The present MS. was used by J. Gairdner to calendar the dispatches in Letters and Papers, Foreign and Domestic, of the Reign of Henry VIII, ed. Brewer, Gairdner, Brodie, vols. viii-xii (London, 1885-1891), passim. A partial edition of the dispatches in Correspondence des nonces en France Carpi et Ferrerio 1535-1540 et Légations de Carpi et de Farnèse, ed. J. Lestocquoy (Rome-Paris, 1961; Acta nuntiaturae Gallicae, 1), pp. 1-260, with mention of the present MS. on p. l. The dispatches are fully published in La nunziatura in Francia di Rodolfo Pio 1535-1537, ed. P. G. Baroni (Bologna, 1962; Memorie storiche e documenti sulla Città e sull'antico Principato di Carpi, xiii), but Add. 8715 is omitted from Baroni's description of manuscript sources (pp. viii-xii). (f. 371v) 'A Monsignor Ambrosio. Da Lione li 2 Giugno 1537 / Due giorni ... vi morse già molti giorni sono'. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '378' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8716, 8717, 8764, and 38162, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 378 (part).
