FARNESE CORRESPONDENCE RELATING TO FRANCE AND PORTUGAL; 1539-1540, 1560-1564. Italian. Copies, partly in cipher. Correspondence of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese (1520-1589), nephew of Pope Paul III Farnese (1534-1549), relating to France and Portugal. Arts. 1-4 contain dispatches relating to Cardinal Farnese's legation as legatus a latere to France (24 Nov. 1539-5 June 1540), and the state of affairs between the Holy See, Emperor Charles V and Francis I of France . The authors of the dispatches are Cardinals Farnese, Marcello Cervini, legate a latere to the emperor (12 May-15 Oct. 1540), Guido Ascanio Sforza, the Cardinal Camerlengo, Filiberto Ferrerio, papal nuncio to France (June 1537-Dec. 1540), Giovanni Poggio, papal nuncio to the emperor (Dec. 1536-Mar. 1541), and other prominent ecclesiastical and lay figures. With headings to the dispatches in the left margins (ff. 1-282). For another copy of these arts. see Add. 8717, arts. 2, 4-6. Art. 5 contains dispatches relating to Portugal and Spain from Cardinal Farnese to Prospero Publicola Santacroce, nuncio to Portugal 6 July 1560-10 May 1561, and Giovanni Campeggi, nuncio to Portugal 10 May 1561-1563. Old shelfmark '339' in ink in the fifth spine compartment and note in pencil 'Tom I 339' (f. ii). Identifiable with Mattei MS. no. 339 in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 20, where listed together with MS. no. 340, identifiable with Add. 8717. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '378' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8715, 8717, 8764, and 38162, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 378 (part).
