TRACT OPPOSING THE ABSOLUTION OF HENRY IV OF FRANCE; circa 1593 -1595. Latin. Copy. Tract relating to King Henri IV of France (1589-1610), his excommunication (Sept. 1585), his conversion to Catholicism (July 1593) and the reluctancy of Pope Clement VIII to absolve the king. The anonymous author strongly opposes granting absolution to the French king. Title (f. 1) 'Responsio canonica ad scriptum nuper editum in causa Henrici Borbonij quo illius fautores persuaderi nituntur Episcopos in Francia iure illum absolveri potuisse ab excomunicatione in casu sedi apostolicæ reservato' [preceded by the note 'vide'], inc. (f. 5) 'Nuper prodijt in lucem scriptum typis impressum sine nomine auctoris cui titulus eis verbis præfixus erat. / Episcopos in Francia iure potuisse absolvere Henricum Borbonium ab excommunicatione in casu sedi Apostolicæ riservato, eis rationibus asseri posse videtur. / Mox auctor universali regula constituta ostendit', expl. (f. 77v) 'Catholicorum invadere bona occupare urbes Ecclesijs adimere libertatem / Finis'. Text preceded by a preface and divided into twenty-two chapters. Contemporary table of contents (ff. 2-4), inc. 'Index Capitum in hac responsione contentorum quibus eiusdem scripti assertiones falsae vel impia aut schismaticæ confutantur / Cap. i. Henrrici Borbonij scelera per omne vitæ tempus fuisse et esse maxima quæ tamen illius cripti [sic] autor ubique fraudulenter substituit'. Old shelfmark '18' and title 'in causa Henrici Borboni' all in ink at top of foredge. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford with shelfmark 'L/16/E' (front pastedown). '119' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8718, 8728, and 8729, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 119 (part).
