TRACTS RELATING TO FRANCE AND ITS CLAIM ON SPANISH TERRITORIES; 1st half of 17th cent. Italian. Copy. Anonymous relazione (art. 1, ff. 2-39v) relating to the monarchy of France and the Spanish usurpation of French territories since the reign of Charles VIII of France (1484-1498). The paper is offered to the King of France, probably Louis XIII (1610-1643), and concerns the loss of the Kingdom of Sicily and Naples, Milan, Flanders, Rossiglione, and Navarra. It is followed by (art. 2, ff. 39v-71) a tract relating to the rise and fall of the monarchy of France. Title (f. 1) 'Trattato / Delle usurpationi fatte dalli Rè di Spagna sopra la Corona di Francia dal Regno di Carlo Ottavo fino à i tempi nostri'. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. ‘119’ in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8718, 8720, and 8728, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 119 (part).

1. ff. 2-39v. 'Relatione'; n.d. Inc. 'Sire / La Pace è un bene incomparabile', expl. 'ad eminantissimo grado di Grandezza, e di Gloria'. Mentions (ff. 38v-39) the regency of the Queen Mother Marie de' Medici, the Spanish invasion of the duchies of Berg and Hesse, the Palatinate and Valtellina, and the Thirty Years War.
2. ff. 39v-71. 'Discorso del Principio Progresso, e Declinatione dell antica Monarchia di Francia Dritti, e pretensioni dello Re Chistianissimi sopra l'Imperio'; n.d. Inc. 'Habbitavano anticamente i francesi', expl. (f. 71) 'et infelicità, che può partorire il furore dell'Armi'.
Paper; ff. 71+iv. 256 x 188mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. One Italian hand. Binding of vellum on pasteboards.
