GUIDI DEL BAGNO LETTER-BOOKS: Dispatches and letters to Niccolò Guidi del Bagno, Bishop of Athens, nuncio to France (25 June 1643 - Dec. 1656); 1644-1656
- Scope & Content:
-
Italian. Copies. Imperfect. The dispatches were sent from the Secretaries of State Giovanni Giacomo Panciroli (d. 1 Sept. 1651), Fabio Chigi (elected Pope Alexander VII in 1655), and Giulio Rospigliosi, and from cardinal-nepote Camillo Astalli, known as Cardinal Pamphili (dismissed from office on 3 Feb. 1654 for offence to Pope Innocent X). The books also contain copies of dispatches sent to Cardinals Panciroli and Pamphili by Guidi and other papal nuncios, and relazioni and memoriali from Cardinal Panciroli to Pope Innocent X. They also include copies of letters to Guidi from Olimpia Maidalchini Pamphili, Cardinal and subsequently Prince Camillo Pamphili, Principe Giustiniani, Stefano Vai, bishop of Cyrene and maggiordomo of Cardinal Panciroli, Decio Azzolini, secretary to the cipher, Curzio Testa, secretary to Pope Innocent X, and Carlo Pio of Savoy, papal treasurer. Add. 8734 contains the correspondence for 1644-1648, Add. 8735 the correspondence for 1649-1656. Guidi del Bagno remained in office for more than twelve years because his successor Nereo Corsini, Bishop of Damiat, appointed as nuncio to France in 1652, was never accepted by the French government. Corsini's name appears (Add. 8735, f. 232v) in the list of the papal nuncios appointed on 29 Jul. 1652. In Dec. 1656 Guidi del Bagno was replaced as nuncio to France by Celio Piccolomini (Add. 8735, ff. 514v, 517), who remained in office 27 Oct. 1656 - Aug. 1663. Marginal notes 'In Cifra' (or 'Cifra') and 'In piano' distinguish the dispatches originally written in cipher. Old shelfmarks ‘263’ and '264' in ink in the fifth spine compartments. Identifiable with Mattei MSS. nos 263 and 264 in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 19. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '586' in pencil in top left corners of front pastedowns. Purchased, together with Add. 8704, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 586 (part.).
Paper. Two volumes. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. Several Italian hands. Late 17th-cent. bindings of full vellum.
