NANI LETTER-BOOKS: Dispatches from and to Giovanni Battista Nani, Venetian Ambassador to France April 1644 - June 1648; 1644-1648. Italian and French. Add. 8739 partly autograph. The contents of the letter-books are as follows: (a) Add. 8736 and 8738 (ff. 1-400): Nani's dispatches to Doge Francesco Erizzo (d. 2 Jan. 1646), April 1644 - Jan. 1646; - (b) Add. 8737 and 8741: Nani's dispatches to Alvise Contarini, Venetian Extraordinary Ambassador at the Congress of Münster, June 1644 - June 1648; - (c) Add. 8738 (ff. 402-433), 8740, 8742, 8743, and 8744 (ff. 2-362): Nani's dispatches to Doge Francesco da Molin (elected 20 Jan. 1646), Jan. 1646 - June 1648; - (d) Add. 8739: original dispatches to Nani from Girolamo Cavazza, Venetian resident at Malta and Marseille, and additional papers, Aug. 1645 – March 1646; - (e) Add. 8744 (ff. 362-367): Nani's Capitoli to the Venetian Senate included in dispatches sent by his successor Michele Morosini, 30 June - 21 July 1648. The MSS. are dated according to the more veneto. Paper. Nine volumes. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf, except in Add. 8739, a composite volume. Three main Italian hands plus other Italian and French hands: (1) Add. 8736, 8738 (ff. 2-215v); - (2) Add. 8737, 8738 (ff. 215v-433), 8740, 8741, 8742, 8743, 8744; - (3) Cavazza's hand and others in Add. 8739. Calligraphic frontispieces, except in Add. 8738. Guilford bindings of quarter vellum with covers of marble paper over pasteboards. Edges mottled in red, except for Add. 8739.
