LIFE, WILL AND OTHER PAPERS RELATING TO CARDINAL GIULIO MAZARIN; 2nd half of 17th cent. Italian. Copies, 18th cent. The anonymous life of Cardinal Giulio Mazarin (1602-1661) is a version of the so-called 'Anonymous of Turin'. However it lacks the preface and differs in other details from the life published from a MS. in the University Library of Turin by L. Chiala, 'Il Cardinale di Mazarino', in Rivista Contemporanea, iv (1855), pp. 539-584. Other variants of the same life in Add. 8379 (ff. 139-180v; dated 24 May 1659), 20063, 44983, all Guilford MSS., and in Add. 10900, 10906 (ff. 1-71v), both from the Canonici collection. A much shorter life of Cardinal Mazarin in another Guilford MS., now Add. 8375, ff. 56-60v. A list of MSS. in Italian libraries containing a Mazarin's life in U. Silvagni, Il Cardinal Mazzarino (Turin, 1928), pp. 586-587. The other texts in the present MS. are probably spurious: see U. Salvagni in Il Cardinal..., op.cit., pp. 541-544, mentioning another copy of arts 5-7 in Bologna, University Library, MS. 1495 (2704), art. 4. The MS. is listed in Palma di Cesnola, no. 1644, p. 128. Note (front flyleaf) 'No. 20. di Catalogo' by a later hand. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '531' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8746-8750, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 531 (part).
