LETTERS AND TRACTS ON RELATIONS BETWEEN FRANCE AND THE PAPACY at the time of Popes Alexander VII and Clement X and King Louis XIV; 1655-1672. Italian, Latin, Spanish, and French. Copies. A collection of tracts, papal briefs and letters mostly relating to the dispute between France and the Papacy that arose after the attack on the French Ambassador at Rome, Charles de Blanchefort, Duc de Créqui, by the papal Corsican Guards on 20 Aug. 1662. The quarrel almost precipitated France and the Papacy into war and ended only with the acceptance by Alexander VII of the humiliating Treaty of Pisa, signed on 12 Feb. 1664. The MS. includes briefs of Alexander VII and Clement X, letters of Louis XIV, Cardinal Mazarin, Cardinal Flavio Chigi, the Duc de Créqui, the French secretary of state for the foreign affairs Hugues de Lionne, the King John Casimir II Vasa of Poland, and Queen Christina of Sweden. Some letters, papal briefs, relazioni and speeches were translated into French and published in Relation de tout ce qui se passa entre le Pape Alexandre VII et le Roy de France au sujet de l'insulte que les Papalins firent au Duc de Crequi le 20.
