TRACTS, LETTERS AND PAPERS RELATING TO THE DISPUTE ON THE REGALIA IN FRANCE during the papacy of Innocent XI (1676-1689); 1679-1688. Italian, Latin, and French. Copies. Most texts (ff. 1-196v, including arts. 1-17) relate the development of the régale in France around 1681-1682, at the time of the Declaratio Cleri Gallicani or Four Articles of the Gallican Church promulgated by the Assembly of the French Clergy on 19 March 1682 (art. 12, ff. 135-135v) and ratified by Louis XIV on 23 March (art. 13, ff. 136-137v). The MS. includes proceedings of the Assembly of the French Clergy and Parliament and royal edicts on the régale. It also includes letters to Innocent XI from the Bishop of Toulouse, Josef de Montpezat de Carbon (arts. 5, ff. 39-43, and 7, ff. 61-64v), in support of the French Clergy, and from the Vicar General of the Chapter of Pamiers, Jean Cerle (art. 6, ff. 59-60v), strongly opposing the Assembly. The last texts (ff. 197-222v, including arts. 18-19) are related to the excommunication launched in 1687-1688 by Innocent XI against the French Ambassador Henri Charles de Beaumanoir, Marquis de Lavardin, caused by the question of the 'franchises' or claims to extra-territoriality made by resident ambassadors at Rome. On the question of the régale see C. Gérin, Recherches historiques sur l'assemblée du clergé de France de 1682, 2nd ed. (Paris, 1870); L. O'Brien, Innocent XI and the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (Berkeley, CA, 1930); P. Blet, Les Assemblées du clergé et Louis XIV de 1670 à 1693 (Rome, 1972); P.
