RELATION OF FRANCE; circa 1718. French. Copy. A detailed relation of the court and provinces of France, providing names and appointments of contemporary officers and members of the royal family (ff. 94-101v). Philip Duke of Orleans is Regent of France (ff. 97, 98v-99), Louis Auguste Duc de Maine, natural son of Louis XIV, is the superintendent to the education of Louis XV (ff. 96v-97), Cardinal Armand Gaston Maximilien de Rohan, is Grand Aumônier of the King (f. 12v). The list of Marshals of France in 1718 (ff. 69-69v) suggests that the relation was written in that year. Title (f.1) 'Histoire de la magnificence dela Cour et des Etâts de France', inc. (f. 2) 'Dela France en general / La France est une figure a peu prés carrée', expl. (f. 101v) 'Et comme Chevalier de Malthe n'est pas marié / Fin'. Contemporary table of contents (ff. 102-103). Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '119' in pencil in top left corner of f. i verso. Purchased, together with Add. 8718, 8720, 8728, 8729, 8745, 8752, 8756, 8757, 8759, and 8760, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 119 (part).
Paper; ff. 103+v. Old pagination in ink '1-200' (ff. 2-101v); no. 30 in ink in right top corner of last blank flyleaf. 260 x 192mm. Horizontal catchwords at end of gatherings. One French hand. 18th-cent. binding of vellum, with decorated paper pastedowns and contiguous flyleaves. Edges mottled in red and black.
