CHRONICLES OF FLANDERS, GERMANY, THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE AND NORTH AFRICA (MAGHREB) 1509-1667; late 17th cent. Italian. Copy. Imperfect. Short chronicles relating historical and religious events of the countries. Notably the chronicle of the Ottoman Empire does not mention the battle of Lepanto for the year 1571. The volume was possibly part of a series, as suggested by the comment (f. 44) 'vedi Istoria Italiana 1515+'. The title (f. ii) 'Storia della Fiandra Germania Ottomano Barbaria Dall'anno 1500 fino 1670 circa', was added by a later hand. The text is divided into four books, each numbered with a roman numeral 'I-IV' at the beginning by a later hand. Books 2-4 are also marked at the beginning by three bookmarks as small paper slips glued onto the verso of preceding blank leaf. Notabilia and historical dates singled out in margins. Old shelfmark 'No. 55' in black ink in top of f. ii. Armorial bookplate of the 5th Earl of Guilford with shelfmark 'L/21/A' (front pastedown). '521' in pencil in top left corner of f. i verso. Purchased, together with Add. 8762, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 521 (part). Contents as follows:
1. ff. 1-43v. Chronicle of Flanders 1519-1667; n.d. Inc. 'I.N.D. / Illustrata in questi tempi la città di Roterdam', expl. 'stabiliti i trattati di pace in Breda'. Marginal notabilia beginning with 'Fiaminga'.
2. ff. 44-112. Chronicle of Germany 1509-1665; n.d. Inc. 'I.N.D. / Restò in quest'anno confusa dalle fazioni degl'Usiti', expl. 'Si estinse con la morte di Sigismondo Arciduca d'Ispruch la linea della Casa di Austria, che nel Tirolo Dominava'. Marginal notabilia beginning with '1509: Germania'.
3. ff. 113-150v. Chronicle of the Ottoman Empire 1509-1640; n.d. Inc. 'I.N.D. / Risenti in quest'anno gli effetti d'un horribile terremoto la città di Costantinopoli', expl. 'et un altro figlio più tenero di anni 4'. Marginal notabilia beginning with 'Ottomana'.
4. ff. 151-160. Chronicle of North African countries 1511-1614; n.d. Inc. 'I.N.D. / Zidamete o pure come altri vogliono Maometto, o Benamet', expl. 'che ne godevano l'intiero possesso'. Marginal notabilia beginning with 'Barbaria'.
Paper; ff. 160+ix, plus 18 unfoliated interleaved leaves after ff. 43, 112, 150, missing two leaves before f. 44. 290 x 205mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. One Italian hand. Late 17th-cent. binding of full vellum; decorated paper pastedowns and contiguous flyleaves.
