PAPERS RELATING TO THE ELECTION OF THE ARCHBISHOP OF UTRECHT; 1699-1717. Latin and Italian. Copies. A collection of papers relating to the controversy between the Holy See of Rome and the Church of Holland in respect to the election of the Archbishop of Utrecht. In 1697 the Metropolitan Chapter of Utrecht elected as Archbishop Peter Codde, Vicar Apostolic and Bishop of Sebaste. Pope Innocent XII, supported by the Jesuits, refused to recognise the election and designated Theodore de Cock instead. Consequently the Metropolitan Chapter rejected the papal appointment and expelled de Cock. With this act the Church of Holland started a controversy with the Holy See which led to the Schism of Utrecht and continues up to present times. Among other papers the MS. includes copies of bullae and briefs from Clement XI, edicts and decrees by the Dutch government, letters of correspondence between the Congregation of the Propaganda Fide, Peter Codde, Jacob Catz, Gerhard Potcamp, Hugon van Heussen, Cardinal Fabrizio Paolucci de Calboli, secretary of state of Clement XI, the papal nuncios Giovanni Battista Bussi, Vincenzo Santini, Giulio Piazza, and the act of renunciation by Adam Daemen of his appointment as Vicar Apostolic. Titles (f. 1) 'Documenta pro historia missionis Hollandiae perturbatae', (f. 2) 'Atti nella causa dell'Arcivescovo di Sebaste Vicario Apostolico d'Olanda'. Inc. (f. 2v) 'Congregationes particulares in causa Arciepiscopi Sebasteni Vicarij Apostolici per Federatum Belgium / Prima congregatio habita in causa Archiepiscopi Sebasteni 25 septembris 1699 / In congregatione particulari de Propaganda Fide', expl. (f. 248) 'Atto di rinunzia di Monsignor Adamo Daemen vicario apostolico delli 11 agosto 1709 ... et communicavi requisitus / Loco sigilli / In fidem Damianus / Herm: Nydeggen Notarius qui supra subscripsit'. Followed (ff. 249-255v) by a detailed table of contents. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '392' in pencil in top right corner of f. i. Purchased, together with Add. 8675, 8702, 8732, and 8777, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 392 (part).
