GIUSEPPE LUIGI ASSEMANI: Travel Journal to Egypt and the Middle East; 1744-1745. Italian. Autograph. Giuseppe Luigi Assemani (circa 1710-1782), a naturalised Italian from a Syrian Maronite family, was professor of Syriac and Oriental liturgy at the Catholic University 'La Sapienza' in Rome from 1737; cf. Catholic Encyclopedia, vol. i (1907), pp. 794-795, and DBI, 4 (1962), pp. 436-437. He was also the brother of Giuseppe Simone Assemani, orientalist and Librarian of the Vatican Library, for whom see Add. 4432 (f. 392), 8798, 21416 (f. 25), and 39082. The present MS. is the autograph journal of a journey through Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, and Egypt that Giuseppe Luigi undertook between 19 Aug. 1744 - 12 Oct. 1745. The title, added by a later hand (f. 1v), says 'Descrizione esatta del viaggio fatto da Monsignore Giuseppe Luigi Assemani nell'Egitto, Siria, ed altre parti Orientali fatta di proprio pugno'. Inc. (f. 2) 'In nomine Dei / Mercoledi 19 agosto 1744 ad ore 24 incirca partì da Roma', expl. (f. 57) '12 dicto [i.e. agosto 1745] ... non volse pagar per esser anche lui corsaro'. The MS. also includes: - (a) ff. 58-68v, a fragmentary description of the basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and of the streets leading to the Mount of Olives and the garden of Gethsemane, n.d.; - (b) ff. 69-71v, fragment of another travel journal from Macerata to Narni, n.d.; - (c) ff. 72-73v, autograph letter to Assemani from his nephew Stefano Evodio Assemani, n.d.; - (d) ff. 74-75v, autograph letter from Antonio Assemani, n.d.; - (e) ff. 76-77v, expenses forecast, n.d.; - (f) f. 78, recipe for sour milk, n.d. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '176' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown: uncorrect reference to the sale lot. Purchased, together with Add. 8779, 8780, 8783, and 8803, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 170 (part).
Paper; ff. 78+xvii, plus three unfoliated blanks after ff. 19, 35, 52, 57, and one after ff. 31, 36, 71; ff. 58-78 are later additions. 227 x 170mm; additional ff. 58-68 are over-size and folded. 18th-cent. tacketed binding of full vellum on semi-limp pasteboards with fore-edge flaps.
