JOHANN GUSTAV MAGNUS STRANDMAN: Historical essays on ancient trades with Asia; 1808. French. Copy. Three historical essays on commercial relations between Oriental Europe and Russia with Asia and the Indies in ancient times by the German diplomat, historian, archeologist, and geographer Johann Gustav Magnus Strandman (1784-1842). Other papers relating to him among the Lieven Papers in Add. 47288 (ff. 82, 118), Add. 47289 A (ff. 10, 169, 176, 182), Add. 47289 B (ff. 12, 34, 46), Add. 47293 A (f. 115), Add. 47293 B (ff. 26, 29, 42, 97). The MS. is entitled (f. 1) 'Essais historiques sur l'ancien commerce de l'Asie par Mr. de Strandman J. G. M / St. Petersbourg au mois d'Avril 1808' with addition in minute characters below 'astrandman scripsit'. Detailed table of contents on ff. 59v-60v. Armorial bookplate of J. G. M. Strandman. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '174' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8644, 8647, 8648, 8650, and 8655, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 174 (part). Contents as follows:
1. ff. 2-16v. 'Essai sur les anciennes relations de commerce de la Russie avec la heute Asie et les Indes orientales avant l'époque de l'Invasion des Mongoles'; April 1807. Inc. 'Avant l'époque funeste de l'invasion des Mongoles', expl. 'ramener le commerce de la haute Asie et des Indes aux les anciennes traces. / Au mois d'Avril 1807 / M. de Strandman / Translateur du Col. des Affairs Etrangers'.
2. ff. 17-24. 'Observations sur l'ancien commerce des Indes orientales'; April 1807. Inc. 'La situation géographique et la position des Indes aux bords de l'Océan', expl. 'changèrent entierement le systeme du commerce. / Au mois d'Avril 1807. Mr. Strandman'.
