CLEMENTE OLIGNANI: HUMANITATIS LIBER; 1687. Latin and Italian. Autograph. A collection of historical and moral commonplaces in Italian and Latin in alphabetical order, assembled by Olignani, pupil of the Roman College in Rome, in preparation of his future studies in Rhetoric. According to the Italian preface (f. 2), dated 'primo Ottobre 1687', the collection is based on the teaching of Father Giovan Battista Simonetti. The MS. is entitled (f. 1) 'Comitis Clementis Olignani Humanitatis Liber'. The MS. is briefly described in P. O. Kristeller, Iter Italicum, iv (1989), p. 86. Frontispiece (f. 1) with penwork decoration representing the coat-of-arms of Count Clemente Olignani; penwork decorations also for headings and colophons. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '155' in pencil in top centre of inside front cover. Purchased, together with Add. 8789, 8801, and 8804, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 155 (part). Contents as follows:
1. ff. 3-28. Collection of commonplaces in Italian. Inc. 'Adsint principio Jesus, ac Virgo Beata Meo / Addolomino d'Agrigoltore Re / Le menti gagliarde non si lasciano abbagliare', expl. 'Xerse comanda che sia flagellato il Mare ... e l'Aure stesse havendo perduto il Etc.' / L'Argomenti Volgar son già finiti'.
2. ff. 29-46. Collection of commonplaces in Latin. Inc. 'Actila flagellum Dei / Quo tamen degerantis Naturae miracula fieri dicatur', expl. 'Xerses Platanum in Uxorem sibi deligit ... Dum Coniugem tuum etc / Argumenta Latina sunt iam confecta'.
3. ff. 47-54v. 'Completis omnibus Argumentis, Sententiarum Figurae ordinatim conscribuntis'. Inc. 'Allegoria / Milites ne terreamini a bello / Liceat undequaquam odiosas fluctus excitaverint flammas', expl. 'Sustentatio et Transitio / Enricus Octavus Dium Thomam Cantuariensem Episcopum ... Presulis Cineres in Mare proiciantur / Sentetiarum Figurae in finem redacte feliciter sunt'.
4. ff. 55-58v. 'Post Sententiarum Figuras Criae Partes sequentes'. Inc. 'Cria Verbalis / Rebus in angustis facile est contemnere vitam / Ab encomio / Toto aberrat Caelo qui minime Martiale Poetae', expl. 'Ab epilogo ... et vos Cesariani hostes discite etc / Omnes Criae Partes descriptae sunt'.
5. ff. 59-66. 'Absolutis omnibus Criae Partibus, ad Quartum Progymnasma deventum tandem est'. Inc. 'A Definitione et Enumeratione Partium / Per Apostrophen / Laus Lucii Sillae Consulis / Gratulor tibi gloriam tuam', expl. 'A Comparatione / Crudelitatis Vituperatio ... ac stragibus inveheris / Sint simul in fine benedicti Jesus de Virgo Sacrata meo.
Paper; ff. 66+iv, plus one unfoliated blank after ff. 1 and 2. Old pagination in ink '1-127' (ff. 3-66). 194 x 130mm. Horizontal catchwords on each page. One Italian hand. Late 17th-cent. binding of full vellum; mottled edges.
