INSTRUCTIONS TO KINGS AND PRINCES on how to conduct themselves and govern their countries; 1740. Italian and Latin. Copy. The anonymous treatise mentions the succession of Charles of Gonzaga Nevers to Vincenzo Gonzaga in 1627 (f. 4); Philip IV of Spain (1621-1665) as defender of the Catholic faith against the protestants (f. 39v); the death of Ferdinand II of Austria in 1637 (f. 40); Louis XIV of France forgiving the participants to the Fronde of the Princes in 1654 (f. 84). The MS. is entitled (f. 1) 'Instruzzione a Monarchi e Principi ed altri per saper governar se stessi e loro Stati / 1740'. Inc. (f. 2) 'Il Prencipe introduca il successore al Governo / Dura condizione del sesso donnesco. Dalla ragion civile è fatta incapace la femina de' feudi', expl. (f. 142) 'e dalle ceneri della Fenice novella vita per ritornargliela'. Text divided into chapters. Old shelfmark in black ink 'F.III.34' at centre of front pastedown; another old shelfmark in black ink '29' on fifth spine compartment. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '334' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8550, 8571, 8594, 8686, 8701, and 8806, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 334 (part).
