MICHELE LONIGO: Discourses of ecclesiastical etiquette; circa 1608-1644. Italian. Copy. Short tracts relating to problems of etiquette addressed to various cardinals and bishops by Michele Lonigo, deputy Prefect of the Vatican Library and Master of Ceremonies of the Papal Chapel at the time of Paul V, Gregory XV and Urban VIII. Among others the tracts are addressed to Louis de Nogaret d'Épernon, cardinal de La Valette (ff. 2-12v), cardinal Ascanio Colonna (ff. 13-18v), cardinal Girolamo Colonna (ff. 44-46v), conte Ambrogio di Carpegna as ambassador of Urban VIII to present Maria of Austria, Queen of Hungary, with the Golden Rose in 1630 (ff. 47-52), Antonio Ricciulli, bishop of Umbriatico (ff. 52-59v), Alessandro Deti, bishop of Anglona (ff. 60-64), Father Niccolò Riccardi, Master of the Sacred Palace, Chief Theologian of Urban VIII and censor of Galileo's Dialogue (ff. 75-78), cardinal Ottavio Ridolfi (ff. 78v-81), Prince Taddeo Barberini concerning the Venetian ambassador at Rome Alvise Contarini (ff. 81v-89v), cardinal Federico Cornaro (ff. 96-99v), cardinal Antonio Barberini (ff. 100-102, relating to the return of cardinal Giulio Sacchetti from Ferrara in 1631, and ff. 162v-170), cardinal Alessandro Cesarini (ff. 102v-105v), cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi (ff. 106-112v), cardinal Giangiacomo Teodoro Trivulzio on his departure as cardinal legate to Marche in 1631 (ff. 136v-162), Benedetto Bragadin, archbishop of Corfù (ff. 170-210v), Giovanni Francesco Guidi del Bagno, archbishop of Patras and nuncio to France, relating to cardinal Pierre de Berulle (ff. 258-263v), and cardinal Giovanni Garzia Millini (ff. 264-289v). The MS. also includes an invective against Giovanni Andrea de' Rossi, caudatario (i.e. train-bearer) of cardinal Cornaro (ff. 211-257), and a note to Marc'Antonio Foppa of Bergamo relating to the Procession on Good Friday (ff. 290-293). Another tract by Lonigo relating to ambassadorial precedence at the papal court in Add. 8732, art. 4, ff. 312-340. For Michele Lonigo see G. The MS. is entitled (f. 1) 'Discorsi di Michele Lonigo'. Inc. (f. 2) 'Instruttione all'Illustrissimo e Reverendissimo Signor Cardinal della Valletta come si debbi reggere nel venir alla Corte di Roma a pigliar il Cappello. Per il primo giorno del suo ingresso privato / Venendo a Roma', expl. (f. 293) 'la quale è fondata sopra l'Istoria Evangelica, e stabilita dalla pieta Christiana'. With marginal notations throughout and contemporary table of contents (ff. 294-296). '21' in black ink in the bottom left corner of front pastedown.
