JACOPO SALVIATI, DUKE OF GIULIANO: Poems; mid 17th cent. Italian. Autograph. Collection of sonnets, poems and poetic dialogues written by Jacopo di Lorenzo Salviati (1607-1672), the Duke of Giuliano unhappily married to Veronica Cibo, and dedicated to Pope Alexander VII (1655-1667), Queen Christina of Sweden, and Prince Leopoldo de' Medici, later Cardinal de' Medici (1667). The present MS. is listed in Palma di Cesnola, no. 488, p. 38, and in Iter Italicum, IV (1989), p. 86a. For Salviati see G. Negri, Istoria degli scrittori fiorentini... Les Salviati (Vatican City, 1985; Studi e Testi, 309), p. 457 and passim. The MS. is entitled (f. 1) 'D.O.M. / Varie composizioni poetiche dell'eccellentissimo Signor Duca Jacopo Salviati'. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. Purchased, together with Add. 8813, 8814, and 8816, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 111 (part).

Fiori dell'orto di Getsemani e del Calvario, two draft copies with variants of a collection of sonnets on the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ, dedicated to Pope Alexander VII and published in Florence in 1667; circa 1667. Inc. (f. 2) 'Alla Santità di Papa Alessandro Settimo / Padre, e Pastor, che l'assetato Armento', expl. (f. 20) 'Al sole apre la Porta e porta il Giorno'; inc. (f. 56) 'Padre e Pastor che l'assetato armento', expl. (f. 64) 'che è ferma base in cui si posa il mondo'. Second copy incomplete. Another copy of the collection with Salviati's name in MS. Vat. 3. ff. 24-27. 'Alla Maestà della Regina di Svezia, mentre regnava guerriera, erudita e casta', poem dedicated to Queen Christina of Sweden; circa 1655. Inc. 'Vago di alzarmi anch'io / con fortunato stile', expl. 's'accoglie entro a Sotocolmo Argo e Micene'.
4. ff. 28-42. Poetic dialogue, possibly entitled 'Ballo degli Zeffiri' as suggested by a later note on f. 42; n.d. Inc. 'Prologo / Interlocutori / 1. Apollo / 2. Ore / 3. Poesia / 4. Istoria / Ore: Indissolubili / Dal nostro Re', expl. 'Premete il suol, pria che s'asconda il sole'.

6. f. 46v. 'Invita alla Virtù significata nelle Muse ad habitare in Roma, liberata dal contagio per la generosa providenza di Papa Alessandro VII', sonnet in praise of Alexander VII for the end of the plague from Rome; circa 1656. Inc. 'Cade il Pitone il suo cader s'ascriva'. Another copy without name of the author in MS. Vat. Chigi D II 24, f. 52: cf. F. Carboni, Incipitario della lirica italiana dei secoli XV-XX. x.
