COLLECTION OF ITALIAN VERSE AND PROSE; circa 1656. Italian. Copy. The collection includes two idylls in praise of Queen Christina of Sweden (arts. 1-2, ff. 1-27v) and two poems in octava rima in praise of Charles Emmanuel II, Duke of Savoy (art. 3, ff. 28-45). From the Mattei Library, MS. 27: old shelfmark '27' in ink in forth spine compartment; cf. Mattei catalogue in Add. 8220, f. 13. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '107' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8337, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 107 (part).
1. ff. 1-21. [Giovanni Antonio Alberici], 'La Gloria ripatriata / Idilio a Cristina Reina la Grande nel suo ingresso in Roma'; [1656]. Inc. (f. 2) 'Sul Pamaso [sic] del Tebro', expl. (f. 21) 'Aghiacciolo, impietrillo il gran sembiante'.
2. ff. 22-27v. 'La Gloria ripatriata / Idilio di Gianantonio Alberici Principe di Vetrana e Marchese di Salice a Cristina di Svezia Reina la Grande nel suo ingresso in Roma' with later addition 'nel 1656'; 1656. Inc. (f. 23) 'Madama / Sono cosi ineffabili le vostre virtu', expl. (f. 27v) 'di decorarmi del titolo glorioso di essere / Di Vostra Maestà / Umilissimo servitore / Gio. Antonio Alberici / Farnese primo febraro 1656'.
3. ff. 28-45. 'Italia / All'invitissimo, e Gloriosissimo Prencipe Carlo Emanuele Duca di Savoia', and 'Risposta all'Italia raveduta del Serenissimo di Savoia'; n.d. Inc. (f. 29) 'Era la Notte, e il pigro Arturo havea', inc. (f. 44) 'Per difender me stesso, e il proprio honore'.
4. ff. 46-73v. 'Satira piacevole / Pasquino di Madrid, overo annotazioni satiriche de' i costumi di quelli habitanti'; n.d. Inc. (f. 47) 'E ben dovere che dopo havervi dato parte del mio passaggio da Genova a Barcellona', expl. (f. 73v) 'della quale so che voi sete amatore e per questo mi dichiaro Vostro Servitore'. A copy of the same text, attributed to a 'Cavaliere francese', in Vienna, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Cod. 5816, ff. 1-18.
5. ff. 74-89v. 'Racconto / Un ottava Rima delle cinque Donne che fabricavano l'acque venenose come furno scoperte, modo, come l'adoperavano, e suo contraveleno, e finalmente come furono condotte alla Giustitia'; n.d. Inc. (f. 75) 'Canto di cinque femine li scorni', expl. (f. 89v) 'di tal donne a fuggir l'empii consigli'.
Paper; ff. 89+iii, plus two unfoliated interleaved blanks after ff. 21 and 45, and four after f. 27. Modern foliation in pencil '22-89' (followed here) taking over the old foliation from f. 22. Old foliation '1-97' (ff. 1-89), including interleaved blanks. 250 x 198mm. Horizontal catchwords. Three Italian hands, the second of which on ff. 29-45 and 83-89; titles on ff. 46 and 74 added by a later hand. Late 17th-cent. full vellum binding.
