GIULIO ROSPIGLIOSI, later Pope Clement IX: Melodramas and poems for music, and a short tract; circa 1638-1646. Italian and Latin. Partly autograph. Collection of melodrammi and other poems for music by Cardinal Giulio Rospigliosi, Prince of Cervetero (1660-1669, elected Pope Clement IX in 1667). The present MS. is listed in Palma di Cesnola, no. 489, p. 38, and it is described in M. Murata, Operas for the Papal Court 1631-1668 (Ann Arbor, 1981), pp. 439-440, with reproduction of f. 78v on fig. 3. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. Purchased, together with Add. 8811, 8814, and 8816, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 111 (part).
Paper; ff. 180+iv, plus 2 unfoliated blanks after ff. 36 and 172, and one after ff. 78, 124, 131, 140, 155 and 166; f. 78 and following blank are a later inserted bifolium. Composite volume. Modern foliation in pencil '1-179' (followed here), repeating no. 19. 280 x 210mm. Horizontal catchwords on each page on ff. 100-124. Rospigliosi's hand (ff. 78-78v, 125-131v, 141-146v, 153v-155v: cf. autograph Rospigliosi's letters in Add. MSS. 26851-26854, passim) and several other Italian hands. Early 19th cent. English binding of full vellum with marbled paper pastedowns and corresponding flyleaves. Contents as follows:
