BENEDETTO MENZINI: Satires; circa 1682-1685. Italian. Copy. Collection of twelve satires by the Florentine priest and poet Benedetto Menzini (1646-1704), member of the Accademia Reale founded in Rome by Queen Christina of Sweden in 1674 and later of the Accademia dell'Arcadia with the name Euganio Libade. Menzini's satires are a vitriolic analysis of the vices of his town, Florence, and of his contemporaries. A later copy (1720) Add. 8815, art. 7 (ff. 90-143v), orders the texts as the posthumous first edition Satire di Benedetto Menzini cittadino fiorentino (Amsterdam [but Naples], 1718), B.L. copies 84.c.14.(1) and 11431.c.34, with some textual variants and notes following each text. The present MS. is listed in Palma di Cesnola, no. 490, p. 38. For Menzini see G. Negri, Istoria degli scrittori fiorentini... Decorated frontispiece (f. 1) with title 'Satire di Benedetto Menzini fiorentino'. Each satire preceded by a brief summary. Contemporary table of contents (f. 2). Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. Purchased, together with Add. 8811, 8813, and 8816, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 111 (part).
