Theological tracts

This manuscript contains a collection of theological tracts. It was produced at the Cistercian abbey of Pontigny, one of the eldest daughter houses of the Cistercian abbey of Cîteaux. The manuscript was preserved in the abbey's library from the 12th century until the monastery was dissolved by French revolutionary forces in 1790.

ff. 67v-89v: Pseudo-Athanasius, De Trinitate (Books I-VIII). Books I-VII were probably written by Eusebius of Vercelli (b. c. 283, d. 371), and book VIII possibly by Vigilius Thapsensis .
ff. 89v-90r: Pseudo-Athanasius of Alexandria, Symbolum Fidei Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti (The Symbol of Faith in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit).
ff. 90r-101v: Vigilius Thapsensis (here unattributed), Contra Arianos , Sabellianos, Photinianos Dialogus (Against Arians, Sabellianists and Photians) (Books I-II).
ff. 101v-102v: Potamius Olisiponensis, Epistola ad Athanasium (Epistle to Athanasius).

1 large historiated initial in red ink, containing a miniature of a king’s head (Solomon) against a green background (f. 2v). 1 large initial in imitation gold on f. 68r. Large decorated in red or blue and small initials in red, blue, green or black ink throughout the manuscript.

The Cistercian abbey of Pontigny, founded in 1114, from the 12th century until its dissolution by Revolutionary forces in 1790: a 12th-century ownership inscription on f. 119v: ‘Liber sanctae Mariae Pontiniacensis’; the manuscript is recorded in Pontigny’s manuscript catalogues from the 12th-century (see Peyrafort-Huin, La bibliothèque médiévale (2001), p. 254, no. 42), early 18th century (see Peyrafort-Huin, La bibliothèque médiévale (2001), p. 317, no. 34), 1778 (see Peyrafort-Huin, La bibliothèque médiévale (2001), p. 351, no. 92); the 1792 catalogue of Pontigny manuscripts that were transferred to Auxerre (see Peyrafort-Huin, La bibliothèque médiévale (2001), p. 386, no. 24); and a catalogue created by Revolutionary commissioners in 1794 (see Peyrafort-Huin, La bibliothèque médiévale (2001), p. 418, no. 10).
The Public Library of Auxerre, from 1791 until 1825: Pontigny’s manuscripts were transferred to Auxerre in 1791 and sold in 1825 by François-Nicolas Comynet (b. 1791, d. 1848) (see Peyrafort-Huin, La bibliothèque médiévale (2001), pp. 209-28).
