Book of Hours, Use of Rome (the 'Golf Book')
- Scope & Content:
-
Book of Hours, Use of Rome (the 'Golf Book'). Imperfect: leaves removed from a Book of Hours (now lost), including a miniature of Boniface of Lausanne (f. 1r), the first two folios of each the Hours of the Virgin (ff. 2-17), and the calendar (ff. 18-30). The pages are not in order, as the original order would have been the calendar, followed by the hours, and then the miniature of Boniface, now on f. 1r, but originally a verso, facing the opening of his Memoria (see Miniatures and Borders 1911). Each of the manuscript's 21 full-page miniatures, in colours and gold (12 in the calendar, 8 in the Hours of the Virgin, 1 depicting Boniface) is surrounded by a historiated border. The manuscript's 40 other historiated full and partial borders (one around each full-page miniature, one around the text on the page facing each Passion miniature in the Hours of the Virgin, and one around each text page in the calendar) incorporate medallions, architectonic decoration, and cameos in grisaille and semi-grisaille. On text pages are large and small initials and line-fillers, in colours and gold. The miniatures are attributed to Simon Bening (d. 1561) and his workshop (see Destrée 1895, Kren and McKendrick 2003). The epithet 'Golf Book' comes from a miniature on f. 27r (the calendar page for September) of four men playing a game that resembles golf.
