f. 118v: Anonymous, a set of annals on the see of Whithorn commonly called de eo quod episcopi (Regarding why the Bishops), relating to the subjection of Whithorn to the archbishops of York, beginning: 'In hystoria et veteribus anglorum voluminibus de ecclesie candide case episcopis que alio vocabulo ab incolis hpltaerne (sic) nuncupatur'.
ff. 118v-119v: Anonymous, Memoriae Sancti Andrae in Scotia (Memorial to St Andrew in Scotland), beginning: 'Qualiter acciderit quod memoria sancti Andreæ Apostoli amplius in Scotia sit quam in ceteris regionibus. Andreas qui interpretatur secundum Hebream ethimologiam'; ending: 'Quorum corpora hic requiesciunt'.
f. 119v: Excerpt from the prologue of the Propheciae Merlini (Prophecies of Merlin), imperfect: 'Incipit prefatio Ambrosii Merlini de regibus Anglie. Coegit me Alexander Lincolnensis presul'; ending: 'et ut omnes philosophos totius Brittannie insule'. 'Gaufridi Monemutensis in prophetiam' (Geoffrey of Montmouth on prophecy) is written above the rubric.

Dimensions: 310 x 200 mm (text space: 230 x 150 mm, in 2 columns).
Foliation: ff. 119 (+ 4 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the beginning + 5 at the end); ff. 1-2 are medieval parchment flyleaves.
Script: Protogothic.
Binding: Post-1600. Brown leather with an erased seal on the front cover showing evidence of a coat of arms which was probably highlighted in gold.

Provenance:
The Cistercian abbey of St Mary, Newminster, founded in 1137: erased ownership inscription beginning 'Liber [...]' (f. 2v, upper margin), (see Colgrave, Bede's Ecclesiastical History (1969) and Ker, Medieval Libraries of Great Britain (1964)); two notes, one in Old French and the other in English recording that Edward Balliol (b. c. 1281; d. 1364), claimant to the Scottish throne, paid homage to King Edward III at Newcastle-upon-Tyne 'in Novo Castro super Tynam in ecclesiam', 19 June 1334 (f. 2v); note on the damage done in the monastery by the Scots on 15 July 1333, who were nearly all killed at Berwick five days later (f. 2v).
John Bale (b. 1495; d. 1563), bishop of Ossory, evangelical polemicist and historian: wrote and signed a 8-line epitaph on Bede and a 12-line note on Bede (f. 2v).
Sir Francis St John (d. 1756), 1st baronet of Longthorpe: inscribed 'Jure me tenet Franciscus St John' (ff. 1r, 2r); probably written by him, notes on Cuthbert's epistle and on Simon of Durham (f. 2r; lower margin).
Sir Francis Palgrave (b. 1788; d. 1861), archivist and historian: his sale, 20 November, 1862, lot 90 purchased by the British Museum, inscription (f. [iii]).
